What is a GCC?
A Global Capability Centre is an offshore unit owned by a global company, not an outsourcing vendor. It delivers finance, analytics, technology and operations, and increasingly owns end-to-end processes and products.
That shift from support centre to capability centre changes who you hire: leaders who can own outcomes, influence global stakeholders and build teams.
The three hiring phases of a GCC
Founding leadership
A site head or centre director, plus the leaders of the first functions to move. These searches are usually confidential and best run as retained searches, for people who have built a centre before and are credible with global leadership.
Core functional teams
Managers and senior individual contributors who will run processes and transitions: FP&A managers, record-to-report leads, data engineers, BI leads. Transition and documentation experience matters as much as technical skill.
Scale and new capabilities
Hiring becomes more repeatable and volumes rise, while mature centres add decision science, AI and finance transformation. Many companies mix in-house recruiters and specialist partners here.

The first ten hires in a new GCC
Each hire should make the next one easier. A reasonable order:
- Site head or centre director. Owns the centre and represents it to the parent.
- HR or talent acquisition lead. Runs hiring, onboarding and local policies.
- Head of the first function to move. A controller, head of finance operations or analytics lead.
- Finance and admin support for the entity. Payroll, compliance and vendor set-up.
- First-line managers in the lead function. The people who receive the transition.
- Senior individual contributors. Experts who document processes and train later hires.
- Head of the second function. Once the first is stable.
- Technology or systems lead. Understands the parent's tools and data controls.
- Transition or programme manager. Tracks knowledge transfer.
- Early analysts and associates. Hired once managers are in place to supervise them.
Choosing a hub city
- Bengaluru. The deepest pool for technology, data, AI and GCC leaders, and the most competition.
- Hyderabad. Technology, pharma and finance operations, with strong campus infrastructure.
- Pune. Engineering, automotive and manufacturing-linked centres, and a growing finance base.
- Chennai. Engineering, banking operations, and finance and accounting.
- Delhi NCR. Finance, consulting and business services talent, close to head offices.
- Mumbai. Banking, financial services, risk and treasury.
Working with the global parent: who owns which decision
Centres lose time when nobody agreed who decides what. Settle ownership before the first search starts.
| Decision | Usually owned by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Headcount plan and budget | Global parent, with input from the site head | It ties to the business case for the centre |
| Site head appointment | Global parent | The role reports into global leadership |
| Function head appointments | Site head and the global function owner, jointly | The hire must work for both |
| Manager and specialist hires | Site head and India function heads | Local leaders know the market |
| Pay bands and offers | India HR, within ranges agreed with the parent | Offers must match the local GCC market |
| Job titles and levels | Agreed jointly | Titles must make sense locally and map to global levels |
Common GCC hiring mistakes
- Hiring the team before the leader.
- Benchmarking pay against the wrong market. GCC talent compares offers with other GCCs.
- Underestimating notice periods. Ask at the first screening call, not at offer stage.
- Treating diversity as a later phase.
- Assessing only technical skill. Stakeholder management across time zones matters as much.

Frequently asked questions
What does GCC stand for?
Global Capability Centre: an offshore unit owned by a global company that delivers finance, analytics, technology and operations for the parent.
Who should a new GCC hire first?
The site head and the leaders of the first functions to move, because they shape the culture and attract the next hires.
How is GCC hiring different from IT staffing?
GCC hiring builds permanent teams that belong to the parent company, so fit, leadership and retention matter; IT staffing supplies contract resources for projects.
Which city is best for a new GCC in India?
It depends on the talent you need most: Bengaluru for technology, data and AI, Mumbai for banking and treasury, with Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Delhi NCR each strong in their own areas.
